重要代表性研究成果分别发表在Science、Nature、Nature Genetics、PNAS、Current Biology、Molecular Biology and Evolution、Trends in Microbiology、 Ecology、Molecular Ecology、Functional Ecology、Conservation Biology、Biological Conservation、Conservation Letters等期刊上,得到Nature、Science等著名杂志和Discovery频道、BBC、路透社等知名媒体广泛报道和评述。

Brief Introduction of Professor Fuwen Wei

Dr. Fuwen Wei obtained his Bachelor Degree in Biology in 1984 and his Master Degree in Zoology in 1987 from China West Normal University. He carried out his Ph.D. study from 1994 to 1997 and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1997 from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Since then, he has been working as a Principal Investigator in the Institute of Zoology, CAS and served as the deputy director of the Institute from 2008-2017. Since 2004, he has served as a wildlife conservation consultant for State Forestry Administration(focusing especially on giant pandas), and vice president of several professional societies such as the China Zoological Society and the China Ecological Society. Dr. Wei received the National Science Fund award for Distinguished Young Scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2001 and was elected as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.

Dr. Wei’s research has focused on conservation biology of endangered animals, especially giant pandas. Using the giant panda as the conservation flagship species and the ideal model of adaptive evolution, he has made systematic and original scientific contributions in the field of conservation biology of endangered wildlife. He has performed pioneering work by applying genetic(e.g. noninvasive genetic sampling) and genomic techniques(e.g. population genomics and metagenomics) to assess the past, present and future of giant panda populations, infer their evolutionary and demographic processes, reveal their ecological, behavioral, physiological, genetic and gut microbiota adaptive mechanisms for feeding on their specialized bamboo diet, and propose targeted strategies for their long-term survival. His main research findings were published in Science, Nature, Nature Genetics, PNAS, Current Biology, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Ecology, Conservation Biology etc. In the light of these significant research achievements, he was invited to write review or perspective articles about the conservation genetics, conservation ecology, evolutionary conservation biology, population genomics and gut metagenomics of giant pandas by the journals Molecular Biology and Evolution, Molecular Ecology, Conservation Biology and Trends in Microbiology.
